SLC

The Student Loans Company — the government-owned company that administers student loans in the UK, including issuing funds to students, collecting repayments through payroll (via HMRC), and managing loan balances. Repayments collected through PAYE are remitted to HMRC and then passed to the SLC. The SLC also handles income-driven repayment plans and writes off balances when the repayment period ends.

How it works

The SLC sits behind the scenes of the student finance system, working alongside Student Finance England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, which handle applications and funding, while the SLC manages the loan account itself once you start borrowing and repaying.

For employees, HMRC collects repayments through payroll and then passes the funds to the SLC in periodic batches rather than in real time. This means your online SLC balance can lag your actual payslip deductions by several weeks or more, which often confuses borrowers checking their account after a pay rise or bonus.

For the self-employed, repayments are calculated through Self Assessment and paid to HMRC directly, who then forward the amount to the SLC in the same way. The SLC also handles voluntary extra repayments, balance and interest statements, and account queries generally.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't my SLC balance match my payslip deductions?

HMRC collects your repayments through payroll and passes them to the SLC in batches rather than instantly, so there's often a lag of several weeks or more before your online account updates.

Can I repay my student loan early?

Yes, you can make voluntary extra repayments directly to the SLC at any time on top of your normal payroll deductions, which reduces your balance and the interest charged over time.

Who should I contact about my loan balance?

The SLC handles balance statements, account queries, and plan details directly, while HMRC and your employer are only responsible for collecting the correct deduction each pay period.
