Which document does your lender want?

SA302 — tax calculation

The calculation for a return you have sent, printed from your HMRC online account. Available for the last 4 years.

Software tax computation

If the return was filed with commercial software, the software prints the tax calculation; it may be labelled 'tax computation'.

Tax year overview

Available for any year from your HMRC online account. Lenders on HMRC's list need it alongside the tax calculation.

How to print your SA302

  1. 1

    Send your tax return first

The SA302 only exists for a year once you have sent your Self Assessment return. Wait 72 hours after sending it before you try to print.

  2. 2

Sign in to your HMRC online account

If you filed using HMRC's online services, sign in to your account.

  3. 3

    Open your Self Assessment details

Go to 'Self Assessment', then 'More details about your Self Assessment returns and payments', and print the tax calculation for the year you need.

  4. 4

Print the tax year overview too

Print the tax year overview for the same year from your HMRC online account, then check that your lender accepts documents you printed yourself.

Where to find each document

Filed with HMRC's online services
Both the SA302 tax calculation and the tax year overview are in your HMRC online account under Self Assessment.
Filed with commercial software (you or an accountant)
Print the tax calculation from the software. Contact the software company if you have trouble printing. The tax year overview still comes from your HMRC online account.
Filed on paper
If HMRC receives your paper return by the deadline, it works out your tax and sends you a tax calculation, which also says whether you need to make payments on account.

HMRC's list of accepting lenders

HMRC publishes a list of mortgage providers and lenders that have agreed to accept self-printed tax calculations and tax year overviews. The list was last updated in June 2020, so confirm the current requirements with your own lender.

Frequently asked questions

What is an SA302?
SA302 is HMRC's tax calculation for a Self Assessment year. GOV.UK describes it as evidence of your earnings, and you can get it for the last 4 years once you have sent your tax return.
What is the difference between an SA302 and a tax year overview?
They are two separate documents. The SA302 is the tax calculation for a return you have sent; the tax year overview is available for any year from your HMRC online account. Lenders on HMRC's list ask for both: the tax calculation and a tax year overview.
How soon can I print my SA302 after filing?
GOV.UK says you cannot print your documents until 72 hours after you sent your tax return.
My accountant files my return. How do I get my SA302?
If you or your accountant use commercial software, the tax calculation is printed from that software, where it might be called something else, such as a 'tax computation'. You can still print a tax year overview from your HMRC online account.
Will my mortgage lender accept an SA302 I printed myself?
Check with the lender. HMRC keeps a list of lenders that have agreed to accept tax calculations and tax year overviews printed by customers, their agents or accountants, and says to always check what each lender requires as evidence of income.
I filed a paper return. Do I get a tax calculation?
Yes. HMRC's SA100 notes say that if it receives your paper return by the deadline, it works out whether you have tax to pay, tells you, and sends a tax calculation that also says whether you need to make payments on account.
Who do I contact if I cannot get my SA302?
Contact HMRC if you have problems getting the documents. If the problem is printing from commercial software, GOV.UK says to contact the software company.
