Frequently asked questions
How much can I pay into a pension tax-free each year?
The standard Annual Allowance is £60,000 for 2026-27, or 100% of your earnings if lower. High earners with adjusted income above £260,000 have this tapered down to a minimum of £10,000. You can also carry forward unused allowance from the previous 3 tax years.
What is the Money Purchase Annual Allowance (MPAA)?
Once you flexibly access a defined-contribution pension — for example taking taxable income via drawdown — your allowance for further contributions drops to the MPAA of £10,000 for 2026-27, and carry forward no longer applies to those contributions.
How much is the full new State Pension?
The full new State Pension is £241.30 a week for 2026-27, paid if you have 35 or more qualifying National Insurance years. With fewer years you get a proportional amount, and you can fill gaps with voluntary Class 3 contributions.
Should I choose drawdown or an annuity?
Drawdown keeps your pot invested and flexible but carries investment and longevity risk — you could outlive your money. An annuity trades your pot for a guaranteed income for life, removing that risk but losing flexibility. Many retirees blend both: an annuity for essential costs and drawdown for discretionary spending.
