How PIP is assessed

PIP eligibility is decided using a points-based assessment, carried out separately for the daily living component and the mobility component. Each activity within a component is scored using descriptors that reflect how difficult you find it — whether you can do it safely, how long it takes, and whether you need help. A total score of at least 8 points qualifies for the standard rate of that component; a total of at least 12 points qualifies for the enhanced rate. Because the two components are scored independently, it is possible to qualify for a different rate (or no award) on each.

PIP is tax-free and not means-tested

You do not pay Income Tax on PIP, and it does not need to be declared as taxable income. Your PIP award is not affected by your income, savings, or employment status. If someone cares for you for at least 35 hours a week because of your PIP daily living needs, they may be able to claim Carer's Allowance — see our Carer's Allowance Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How much is PIP in 2026/27?

From April 2026, PIP pays two components at two rates each. Daily living: £76.70/week standard rate or £114.60/week enhanced rate. Mobility: £30.30/week standard rate or £80.00/week enhanced rate. You can be awarded one or both components, so the maximum combined award is £194.60/week.

How much did PIP rates increase for 2026/27?

PIP rates rose by 3.8% from 6 April 2026, in line with the September CPI inflation figure used for the annual benefits uprating. The daily living standard rate rose from £73.90 to £76.70, and the mobility enhanced rate rose from £77.05 to £80.00.

How is PIP assessed — what are the points thresholds?

PIP uses a points-based assessment for each component separately. You need a score of at least 8 points for the standard rate, or at least 12 points for the enhanced rate, based on how difficult you find daily living or mobility activities — whether you can do them safely, how long they take, and whether you need help. This applies separately to the daily living component and the mobility component, so your award for each can differ.

Is PIP taxable or means-tested?

No. PIP is completely tax-free and is not means-tested — it is paid regardless of your income, savings, or whether you are in work. It is not affected by other benefits you receive, though receiving PIP can unlock or increase other means-tested benefits such as Universal Credit or Pension Credit via disability premiums and elements.

How is PIP paid?

PIP is usually paid every 4 weeks, directly into your bank account. Your decision letter confirms your award, the rate for each component, your first payment date, and when (if at all) your award will be reviewed.

What is the difference between PIP and Attendance Allowance?

PIP is for people aged 16 to State Pension age; Attendance Allowance is for people who have reached State Pension age and need help with personal care. Attendance Allowance has no mobility component, and its two rates match the PIP daily living rates. If you already receive PIP when you reach State Pension age, you normally continue to receive it rather than switching to Attendance Allowance.

Can a carer claim anything if I get PIP?

If someone cares for you for at least 35 hours a week and you receive PIP daily living component (standard or enhanced), they may be able to claim Carer's Allowance. Use our Carer's Allowance Calculator to check eligibility and estimate the payment.
