Frequently asked questions

Who needs to use Making Tax Digital from April 2026?
From 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords with combined gross self-employment and property income over £50,000 in the 2024-25 tax year must use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. The threshold drops to £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028.
What are the MTD quarterly update deadlines?
Under MTD, you must submit quarterly updates to HMRC by: 7 August (for April–July), 7 November (for July–October), 7 February (for October–January), and 7 May (for January–April). A final declaration replaces the annual Self Assessment return.
What happens if I miss an MTD deadline?
For the first year (2026-27), HMRC is operating a 'soft landing' — no penalty points will be issued for late quarterly submissions. However, late payment penalties still apply. From the second year onwards, a points-based penalty system applies for late submissions.
What income counts towards the MTD threshold?
Only gross income from self-employment and UK property rental counts. Employment income (PAYE), dividends, savings interest, capital gains, and pension income do not count towards the MTD threshold. It is the combined total from self-employment and property that determines eligibility.
